For those who want to pull the poncho closer to the body when needed, we now offer the Removable Waist Strap Upgrade, or simply, the Waist Strap.

Two reinforced 1 inch MIL-STD webbing loops are sewn into the inside of the rear flap of the poncho. The included waist strap attaches to those loops using G-hooks, creating a simple removable closure similar to the back strap on a chest rig.

When you want the traditional loose drape of the poncho, remove the strap and throw it in your pants pocket, pack, or even the kangaroo pocket of the poncho itself.

When you want everything pulled closer to the body, hook it in and cinch it down.

Why make it removable

A poncho works because it is simple, loose, and adaptable. We did not want to permanently change that.

The Waist Strap gives you another way to configure the poncho without committing you to wearing it that way all the time.

Use it when you want less movement and a closer fit around the body. Remove it when you want the full drape and freedom of a traditional poncho.

Designed to fit you

The included strap is intentionally long.

Much like a rifle sling, the extra webbing gives you room to adjust the fit around different clothing, layers, and equipment. It also allows you to customize the final length yourself.

Once you know where you want it, simply trim the excess webbing and carefully seal the cut end with a lighter to prevent fraying.

Or leave it long and retain the full adjustment range.

Why G-hooks

We use G-hooks because they are simple, low profile, and keep the hardware consistent with the design language of our Field Cloaks.

They also make the entire strap easy to remove when it is not needed.

Why is this optional

Because not everyone needs a waist strap.

Some people want maximum freedom and drape. Others want the ability to pull their poncho closer to the body depending on what they are doing.

We do not believe in forcing added cost or hardware onto every poncho for a feature you may never use.

If you need it, it is available. If you do not, you are not paying for it.

If you already own a Five Star Poncho and would like the Removable Waist Strap Upgrade added, contact us before checkout.

Existing ponchos can be sent back to our workshop for the upgrade, but we will need to coordinate shipping costs and lead times with you first.

Orders for existing ponchos placed without prior coordination may be refunded and canceled.
